Description:
Large evergreen tree with a long, straight stem, which is characteristically fluted. Leaves narrowly to broadly oblong-elliptic, shiny dark green and glabrous above, covered in rusty or silvery velvet hairs below. Midrib and lateral veins clearly visible; margin entire. Flowers in short, axillary clusters, whitish, densely covered by rusty hairs. Fruit ellipsoid to almost spherical, covered in dark brown hairs.
Notes: In forest situations the leaves may be confused with those of Englerophytum magalismontanum. The latter usually has narrower leaves with the lateral veins obscured by the velvet hairs on the underside.
Derivation of specific name: gorungosanum: of Mt Gorongosa in Mozambique, where the type was collected.
Habitat: In evergreen forest.
