Description:
Slender, shrubby perennial herb, up to 1.5 m tall. Stems erect, much-branched from the base; branches hairy near the top. Leaves opposite, narrowly linear, up to c. 6 cm long, pointed and mucronate at the apex, minutely pubescent on both surfaces; margin strongly rolled under. Flowers in extra-axillary, 4-6-flowered nodding umbels. Corolla lobes reflexed, pale yellow on the inside, often reddish-brown and pubescent on the outside. Corona lobes attached 1 mm above the base of the staminal column, yellow to greenish-yellow, laterally compressed, slightly taller than the column. Follicle on a more or less straight pedicel, 3-3.5 cm long, lanceolate in outline, tapering into a long pointed beak, pubescent, sometimes with soft bristles along longitudinal ridges.
Notes: Very similar to Gomphocarpus stenophyllus from Kenya and Tanzania.
Derivation of specific name: tenuifolius: with narrow leaves.
Habitat: More or less restricted to granite kopjes on the central watershed plateau.
