Description:
Dwarf perennial with 1 to several annual stems, growing from a tuber. Leaves up to 100 × 25 mm, oblong, finely hairy. Flowers subterminal, up to 25, in opposite, sessile umbels. Corolla 20-40 mm long, lobes united into a cage, dark crimson on the inside, greenish yellow outside. Corona campanulate with 5 narrow slits in the rim; inner lobes linear. The flowers are foul smelling. Fruits ellipsoid.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: barberiae: named after Mary Elizabeth Barber, 1818-1899, plant collector in South Africa.
Habitat: In Brachystegia woodland and open grassland.
