Description:
Erect or procumbent perennial with annual stems, growing from a tuber. Leaves ovate-elliptic. Flowers terminal in a 20-30-flowered umbel. Corolla up to 25 mm in diameter, flat and wheel-shaped, blackish purple, hairless. Outer corona cup-shaped with 10 teeth; inner lobes oblong.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: buchananii: after John Buchanan (1855 – 1896), Scottish horticulturist, missionary, farmer and plant collector in Malawi, who became Acting British Consul to Central Africa.
Habitat: Grassy areas in Brachystegia woodland.
Altitude range: (metres) 600 - 1700 m

Worldwide distribution: DRC, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
