Description:
Perennial herb usually with a single branched stem, 7-30 cm high, growing from a discoid tuber up to 10 cm in diameter. Leaves sessile or shortly petiolate, linear to ovate, 5-20 mm long, pubescent above. Inflorescences axillary, 1-2-flowered, on pedicels 2-5 mm long. Sepals lanceolate, c. 1.5 mm long. Corolla 5-25 mm long with linear-subulate lobes, united at the tips forming a cage, white to reddish-brown.
Notes: Although listed by Mapaura & Timberlake in Sabonet Report 33 (2004) there are no cited records for Zimbabwe in Flora Zambesiaca 7(2), 2020.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In shallow soils over granite or among trees and shrubs in Kalahari sand.
Altitude range: (metres) 550 - 1250 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Mozambique, (Doubtful) Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini and South Africa.
