Notes: Some specimens with flowers up to 8.5 cm in diameter; longer and mostly 4-angeled stems and forming larger clumps, were formerly recognized as a different subsp. magniflora (Leach, 1988). In more recent literature this is generally no longer considered taxonomically distinct (eg. Bruyns 2005).

Habitat: Open dry scrubland, in stony areas, often in calcrete or hard loamy soils.
