Description:
Perennial herb with persistently yellow-brown hairy stems, up to 2 m long, growing from a woody rootstock. Leaves narrowly oblong, ovate or elliptic-ovate, 3-11 cm long, more or less cordate at the base, pubescent (densely so in this variety); petiole hairy, 1-4.5 cm long. Flowers axillary, solitary or few in small head; peduncles 1-7.5 cm long, hairy; bracts (in this variety) ovate, up to 19 mm long. Sepals (in this variety) ovate, up to 16 mm long. Corolla funnel-shaped, mauve to purple-pink, 2.5-5 cm long, more or less hairy. Capsule globose, hairless.
Notes: See var. asperifolia and var. heterocalyx for comparison.
This species is generally not easy to distinguish in field from Ipomoea blepharophylla. See that species for comparison.
Derivation of specific name: fulvicaulis: with fulvous (reddish-yellow, tawny) stems.
Habitat: In woodland, open forest and along roadsides.
Altitude range: (metres) 1200 - 1500 m
