Description:
Perennial herb or small shrub up to 1.3 m, growing from a woody rootstock. Leaves, 3-whorled, elliptic, densely, whitish puberulous mixed with yellowish glands, aromatic when crushed; margins more or less crenate-serrate. Flowers in axillary spikes; corolla white.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: oatesii: named after Frank Oates (1840-1875), British naturalist and traveller who collected plants, birds and reptiles in Matabeleland.
Habitat: In grassland and mixed deciduous woodland; also on stony hillsides on serpentine soils of the Great Dyke
