Description:
Straggling or creeping perennial herb, 12-50 cm tall. Stems quadrangular, branching along the length, hairy with both long and short hairs, some glandular. Leaves ovate to ovate-deltate, 1-4 cm long, usually cordate at the base, more or less densely covered with long hairs, often glandular beneath; margin crenate; petiole2-18 mm long. Inflorescences terminal, lax with 5-20, 2-flowered separated clusters per branch. Calyx 4-10 mm long; teeth narrowly triangular, 1.5-4 mm long, spine-like. Corolla 9-16 mm long, white or rarely pale pink; upper lip 2.5-4 mm long, densely pubescent, with or without glandular hairs; lower lip 3.5-8 mm long, laxly pubescent outside. Nutlets broadly ovoid, 2 mm long, dark brown, minutely tuberculate.
Notes: This species was known in Zimbabwe under the incorrect name Stachys grandifolia E. Mey. ex Benth. The origin of this name is uncertain but it is not even listed as a synonym in Flora Zambesiaca volume 8 part 8 (2013: 37-39).
Derivation of specific name: natalensis: of Natal, South Africa.
Habitat: Among rocks in shaded vegetation on mountain slopes.
