Description: |
Branched perennial herb with stems up to 20 cm long, growing from a strong woody root stock. Leaves not or only weakly clustered, linear or narrowly elliptic to lanceolate, 10-21 mm long, glandular punctate on both surfaces but otherwise hairless; margin entire, thickened. Inflorescences in short few-flowered racemes arranged in a branched head. Flowers pale to deep violet-blue, occasionally white. |
Notes: | It is only distinguished from var. thyrsoidea from Malawi and Tanzania in minor characters consistent with a long period of isolation. |
Derivation of specific name: | austrorhodesiaca: of Southern Rhodesia, a former colonial name of Zimbabwe. |
Habitat: | In grassland and scrub, often among rocks. |
