Description:
Annual herb, up to 1 m long. Stem erect, often branched, terete, with long hairs below, with rough, short stiff hairs above. Basal leaves when present 20 -35 mm long, broadly elliptic to almost circular, 3-veined; margin entire. Lower stem leaves ovate-lanceolate to more to less narrowly oblong, 45-70 mm long, 3-veined; margin entire or coarsely toothed. Higher stem leaves, linear to linear-lanceolate, 15-40 mm long, single-veined; margin entire or remotely toothed. All leaves rough with short, appressed, stiff hairs. Inflorescences terminal spikes, soon lax, 6-30 cm long. Bracts ovate-lanceolate, 4-5 mm long, often larger and leaf-like at the flowers, with rough stiff hairs or sometimes hairless with ciliate margins. Calyx 4-8 mm long, 5-lobed, more or less clearly 10-veined, more or less sparsely covered with short spreading stiff hairs. Corolla blue, mauve, purple or white; tube 6-7.5 mm long, straight or rarely curved, hairy in the throat; lobes up to 3 × 2 mm, obovate-oblong. Capsule ovoid c. 5.5 × 3 mm.

Derivation of specific name: hispida: rough with stiff hairs (hispid)
Habitat: In Brachystegia woodland other types of open woodland and well-drained grasssland, often in sandy soils.
