Description:
Unbranched, erect, annual herb, about 20 cm tall. It has much larger flowers than the similar S. asiatica and a more dense inflorescence with a larger number of flowers open at the same time. The lower lip is more deeply 3-lobed.
Notes: It is most common in grassland and Brachystegia woodland in the Eastern Highlands but also in Teak woodlands (Baikiaea plurijuga) in the west of the country.

Habitat: In montane grassland and woodland.
Altitude range: (metres) 900 - 2100 m
Flowering time:Nov - Mar
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
