Description:
Shrub or multi-stemmed small tree up to c. 4 m tall. Branches rigid greyish, armed with short spines. Leaves in clusters on small woolly spurs, usually 3-foliolate; leaflets obovate-oblong, 4-19 mm long, grey-green; apex rounded to notched; margin entire, rolled under. Flowers appearing with the leaves, showy, bright yellow, up to 3.5 cm in diameter, petals wrinkled along the edges, in 1-3-flowered clusters among the leaves. Fruit a flattened slender capsule, up to 7 × 1 cm, pale brown with a sharply pointed tip, dehiscent.

Derivation of specific name: obovatum: with obovate leaves
Habitat: In dry rocky areas, often on basalt soils or granite sands.
Altitude range: (metres) 150 - 1400 m
Flowering time:Sep - Nov (and at other times following sudden rain)
Worldwide distribution: Namibia, Zimbabwe, Northern and Eastern Cape, Free State and Limpopo, South Africa.
