Description:
Small, slender tree. Leaves opposite, crowded near the ends of branches, large, up to 25 cm, elliptic to obovate, thickly leathery. Flowers large, c. 13 cm in diameter, white flushed with pink or greenish-red. Fruit ellipsoid, crowned with the old calyx lobes, yellowish to brown.
Notes: Though widespread in tropical Africa, this is a rare species in Zimbabwe, recorded only from a few low-altitude, high rainfall areas in Eastern Zimbabwe. Most records are old and the habitats may no longer exist. The only recent records are from riverine forest on a farm in Burma Valley and this area may also be under threat.
