Description:
Perennial herb up to 25 cm, growing from a woody rootstock.
Notes: The bright blue flowers of this species and the closely related P. sykesii subsp. otomerioides are a familiar sight in spring on freshly burnt ground in grassland and woodland. It seems that fire is actually needed to stimulate flowering. Both species are very similar and are sometimes found growing together.
Derivation of specific name: schweinfurthii: named after Dr Georg August Schweinfurth (1836-1925), German botanical collector and taxonomist.
Habitat: In grassland and open woodland
Altitude range: (metres) 800 - 2250 m
Flowering time:Aug - Oct
Worldwide distribution: Nigeria to South Sudan and south tropical Africa.
