Description: |
Suffrutex with stems up to 30 cm long, growing from a horizontal rhizome. Leaves mostly in whorls of 3-4, obovate to obovate-oblong or elliptic, 4-16 cm long, somewhat leathery, hairless (in this variety); margin entire; petiole 5-20 mm long. Stipules 4-5 mm long, triangular with a drawn out apex, hairless. Inflorescences in the lower leaf axils, up to 4 cm long, much-branched, few-many flowered, usually hairless but rarely with spreading hairs on the inflorescence axes and calyx tubes. Corolla red or greenish; tube 3-4 mm long; lobes 4-5 mm long, reflexed or sometimes erect. Fruit oblong, subglobose or pear-shaped, up to 3 × 2 cm, hairless. |

Notes: | Somewhat similar to Vangueria pygmaea, the new name for the former Pachystigma pygmaeum, another suffrutex in the same family. However, Pygmaeothamnus zeyheri var. zeyheri has hairless leaves mostly in whorls of 3-4 whereas Vangueria pygmaea has generally hairy leaves which are paired and only rarely in whorls. |
