Description:
Erect perennial herb with unbranched annual stems, normally up to 60 cm, occasionally taller. Leaves in whorls of 3-5, elliptic or lanceolate, shiny green above, covered in greyish white papillose hairs below. Inflorescences in 3-5-flowered whorls at the leaf nodes, creamy yellow to bright yellow. Fruit spherical, crowned with the persistent calyx limb, green, turning black when ripe.

Habitat: In grassland and Brachystegia woodland.

Worldwide distribution: Angola, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Limpopo, Gauteng, South Africa.
