Description:
Perennial herb with many annual stems growing from a woody rootstock. It may grow into a subshrub up to 1 m but often the stems are more spreading decumbent or ascending. Leaves often close together and overlapping, (in this subsp.) linear, up to 30 mm long; margin markedly revolute. Capitula solitary at the ends of the branches. Involucres 10-15 mm long with bracts 6-8-seriate, closely appressed and overlapping, purple-tipped. Florets purple, c. 10 mm long. Achenes 3-4 mm linear, minutely glandular, 5-6-angled; pappus with short narrow scales outside and whitish, barbellate setae, 6-8 mm long inside.
Notes: It is distinguished from subsp. wildii by the narrower, near linear leaves which are distinctly revolute.

Habitat: A species of sub-montane grassland; often spreading on to the edges of gravel roads
