Erect blue-green annual herb to 1 m. Stems and leaves slightly succulent, often purplish, especially below. Leaves sessile, lanceolate to oblong, up to 20 × 6 cm, sparsely hairy and becoming hairless; clasping the stem at the base; margin with scattered minute teeth. Capitula c. 12 mm across, orange or red; base 3-5 mm across. Invlucral bracts c. 8-9, 9 mm long, equal in 1 series. Rays absent.
Notes: This species was formerly described in a broad sense, including at least 7 taxa now recognized as separate species. Of these Coccinia caespitosa is also found in Zimbabwe. As the distribution of the latter is not yet clear it is possible that records placed here under C. coccinia may include some that should now be assigned to C. caespitosa.
Derivation of specific name: coccinea: scarlet, although the flowers can often be bright orange
Habitat: In sandy and rocky woodland or margins of forest, often in disturbed areas.

Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Burundi, Uganda, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
