Description:
Creeping, sprawling herb, rooting at the nodes, Leaves 7 - 10 cm long, lanceolate-elliptic, sheathing at the base, slightly fleshy, above dark purple-green with broad silvery-grey bands along the length on each side of the mid rib; purple-red beneath. Flowers in pairs, 10-15 mm in diameter, bright mauve pink.
Notes: The sap of this plant can cause skin irritation.
Derivation of specific name: zebrina: zebra-striped, referring to the pale striped variegated leaves.
Habitat: Frequently cultivated as a ground cover in shaded gardens and occasionally escaping in high rainfall areas in shady disturbed ground.
