Status: Cultivated and rarely naturalised
Trunk, or at least the upper major branches, grey-green, smooth. Juvenile leaves petiolate, peltate: lamina 9-17 × 6-8 cm, broadly ovate, bristly-hairy, the hairs red on very young leaves; base shallowly cordate; apex acute. Adult leaves lanceolate, but rarely seen as juvenile and intermediate leaves predominate. Inflorescences compound. Umbels 3-7-flowered. Peduncles terete. Flowers white or cream. Fruits rounded or urn-shaped, 3-locular.
Derivation of specific name: torelliana: after Count Luigi de Torelli, 1810-1887, member of the Italian senate, who promoted the use of eucalypts to dry up the malarial Pontine Marshes near Rome.
