Acacia woodii Burtt Davy
Common names: Mubayamhondoro (Shona) Muhunga (Shona) Muzunga (Shona) Paperbark acacia (English) Umlaladwayi (Ndebele) Umpumbu (Ndebele) Umsasane (Ndebele)
Description: Medium to large tree, often with a flattened canopy. Bark grey, rough and peeling to reveal a yellowish layer underneath. Thorns paired at the nodes, straight. Older trees often appear thornless. Leaves compound, large with 8-20 pairs of pinnae; leaflets pale green or yellowish-green. Flowers in axillary, spherical heads, creamy-white. Pods large, thick and woody, sometimes splitting long after they have fallen and dried.
Notes: The variety var. vermoesenii (De Wild.) Keay & Brenan has been sunk under var. woodii.
Derivation of specific name: sieberiana: after botanist FW Sieber (1789 - 1844)
Flowering time:Sep - Dec
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in Africa from tropical West Africa to Sudan and Ethiopia and southwards through East Africa to Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Growth form(s): Tree.
