Description of the genus

Shrubs. Leaves opposite. Calyx actinomorphic, hairy; lobes 5. Corolla 2-lipped, red or orange; lips long; upper minutely lobed, lower 3-lobed with a distinct keel and 2 channels on lower surface. Fertile stamens 2. Anthers attached parallel to filaments; pollen prolate. Capsule woody, with inelastic placental bases. Seeds 4, lacking hygroscopic hairs.

Worldwide: 19 species in tropical Africa, South Africa (Northern Province) and Madagascar

Zimbabwe: 5 taxa.
