Description of the genus

Bulbous, perennial herbs. Leaf 1(-2), narrowly linear, present only on young bulbs, soon withering and falling. Stem (inflorescence) erect or prostrate, green, copiously and intricately branched or branches fastigiate, persisting until the end of the flowering season. Bracts spurred, small. Flowers white or pale yellow to pale pink, nocturnal. Perianth segments 6, somewhat spreading, fused basally, cohering above when wilted, forming a cap on the developing capsule. Capsule spherical, loculicidal. Seeds semi-spherical, black, shiny.
