Massive tree-size succulent, up to 10 m. The ridges of the branches are set with short spines, the inflorescences are situated at the top of the vertical branches, the flowers small and yellow.
As with many species of Euphorbia, the milky latex is poisonous and highly irritant to skin. When coming into contact with the eyes, it may cause temporary blindness.
