Shrubs, sometimes climbing. Stipules present or 0. Leaves opposite, simple (Lonicera) or compound (Sambucus). Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic or zygomorphic, 4-5-merous. Corolla gamopetalous, sometimes 2-lipped. Ovary inferior, 2-5-locular. Fruit a berry or drupe. Comment: A family represented in the flora area by two introduced species. Similar to Rubiaceae but differing in having either minute stipules or none at all. Worldwide: 15 genera and 420 species, occurring in Eurasia, America, Australia, the Mediterranean and on tropical African mountains. Zimbabwe: 6 cultivated genera and 14 cultivated taxa. |
