Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees. Leaves glabrous, opposite, petiolate. Flowers in axillary clusters, often appearing on old wood. Calyx 3-5-lobed, persistent. Corolla with 4-5 lobes, lobes short in relation to the tube. Stamens 4, exserted. Staminode 0. Style exserted, persistent. Fruit a berry.

Derivation of name: after Albrecht von Haller, 1708-1777, professor of botany, Göttingen.

Worldwide: 4 species in tropical and southern Africa and Madagascar.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
