Description of the genus

Perennial herbs. Leaves opposite, mostly basal (in ours), entire, lobed or dissected. Capitula radiate, borne on long peduncles, solitary or in lax corymbs. Phyllaries 1-2-seriate. Receptacle with scales. Ray florets neuter or female, with large yellow rays. Disk florets yellow. Achenes flattened, winged. Pappus of 2 scales, soon caducous.

Worldwide: 50 species, American

Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa.
