Description of the genus

Herbs or shrubs. Leaves simple, opposite; large with crystoliths on both sides. Inflorescence of terminal panicles or thyrses. Calyx with equal subulate segments. Corolla much longer than the calyx, 2-lipped, sometimes weakly so; upper lip 2-lobed, lower 3-lobed; petals red, yellow or white. Stamens 2. Fruit a clavate capsule. Seeds 4.

Comment: Odontonema is sunk under Justicia in Mabberley (1997), but the genus is retained in Flora Zambesiaca 8(6), pp. 4 and 5.

Worldwide: 40 species in New World tropics.

Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa.
