Description of the genus

Palm clustering or solitary; covered in a dense mat of dark fibres and old leaf bases. Leaves palmate, semi-circular to circular; deeply segmented, green to greyish-green or silvery; petiole with strong forward facing spines. Inflorescence clusters, short, much-branched usually hidden behind the petiole. Flowers small cream to yellow. Fruit round, dark yellow to reddish-brown when ripe.

Worldwide: 1 species in W and C Mediterranean including N Africa.
