Description of the genus

Succulent herbs, rarely under-shrubs; glabrous or hispid. Leaves alternate, margins toothed. Inflorescence heads solitary or in corymbs; bracteolate at base; homogamous, discoid, yellow or purplish; Involucre cylindric or sub-campanulate. Floretslubular, limb 5-toothed, tips long, subulate, hispid. Fruit achenes, narrow, many-ribbed, pappus copious; bristles slender, white.

Worldwide: 40 species in tropical Africa, Asia, Madagascar to N Australia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
