Description of the genus

Herbs. Leaves alternate, pinnatifid or pinnately dissected. Inflorescence small or mid-sized heads at the end of branches or corymbiform. Heads radiate or discoid, rays white, pistillate; involucral bracts dry, 2-3 serrate; receptacle naked, hemispheric or more often conic, or elongate; disc-corolla yellow, 4-5 toothed. Fruit achenes, generally nerved on the margins and ventrally, nerveless dorsally; pappus a short crown or none.

Worldwide: 20 species in temperate regions of Europe, America and Asia, also in southern Africa and naturalised in Australia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
