Description of the genus

Monoecious trees, with irritating, white milky latex. Leaves alternate, simple; petioles long, with 2 glands at the apex. Flowers without petals. Male inflorescences borne on long peduncles. Female flowers, axillary, solitary. Fruit a capsule, dehiscing explosively.

Worldwide: 2 species, native to tropical North and South America

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
