Description: | Large tree, up to 40 m tall. Trunk and branches spiny. Leaves large, ovate; base cordate; apex long-acuminate; petiole long with 2 glands at apex. Stipules large, caducous. Male inflorescence ovoid-conical, 4-5 cm long, dark red, borne on a long (4-10 cm) peduncle, often with a female flower at the base. Female flowers borne on a pedicel, expanding up to 6 cm after anthesis; calyx tube enclosing the ovary; style column 2-5 cm; stigmatic disk flower-like, dark purple, with 11-14 obtuse lobes, spreading radially. Fruit oblate, becoming reddish brown, concave at apex and base, longitudinally grooved, borne on a pendent pedicel. |
