Herbs, palm-like, solitary or clump-forming; trunk woody, unbranched, to 20 m tall. Leaves in 1-plane, 2-ranked, arranged flat and fan-like, erect, glaucous; lamina banana-like, oblong to narrowly elliptic, 3-4 m long, base truncate, apex rounded, leathery; petiole same length as lamina. Inflorescence cymose, lateral, compact, glaucous; spathes 6-12, 2-ranked; bracts lanceolate, leathery. Flowers greenish-white; tepals tapering, linear; calyx segments 3; corolla segments 3, 2 of which are larger. Fruit capsules, opening by 3 valves. Seeds kidney-shaped, blackish, aril bright blue, shredding. Derivation of name: Based on a Madagascan name Worldwide: One species, occurring in Madagascar Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
