Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Stipules 0. Leaves 1-pinnate (imparipinnate) or 2-pinnate, alternate; leaflets serrate. Inflorescence a large terminal panicle. Flowers yellow, zygomorphic; calyx deeply 5-lobed. Petals 4 (or 3 in male flowers), clawed. Stamens up to 8. Ovary 3-locular. Fruit a bladder-like capsule. Seeds black.

Derivation of name: Named after Joseph G. Koelreuter, 1734-1806, professor of natural history at Karlsruhe

Worldwide: 3 species in China and Taiwan
