Description of the genus

Herbs, all part strongly scented. Leaves alternate, lamina simple or compound. Inflorescence terminal, cymose-corymbose or paniculate. Calyx 4 to 5-merous with distinct persistent sepals; corolla 4 to 5-merous; petals greenish or yellowish, imbricate, concave, often toothed or ciliate. Fruit capsules, 3-5 lobed, indehiscent or splitting open at apex. Seeds angular, testa pitted.

Worldwide: 50 species in Macaronesia, Medierranean region and SW Asia
