Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees, evergreen. Stipules caducous, subulate. Leaves shortly petiolate; lamina simple, margins serrate or entire, leathery, secondary veins curved towards margins without forming loops. Inflorescence racemes or panicles, terminal; hypanthium campanulate to tubular; sepals 5, erect or reflexed; petals 5, white or pink, base shortly clawed. Fruit drupe-like, black or bluish, sub-globose, succulent with early caducous sepals leaving an annular ring. Seeds 1 or 2 large, sub-globose, testa thin.

Worldwide: Species 15 in East Asia.
