Description of the genus

Perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, petiolate, pinnatifid, covered in dense silver hairs. Capitula radiate, solitary. Phyllaries in 3 rows, sometimes with dark brown margins. Receptacle flat or convex, without scales. Ray florets white. Disc florets: corolla yellow, 5-lobed. Pappus with an irregularly-lobed corona.

Worldwide: 152 species in Europe, Asia and North Africa, one native to southern Africa.
