Description of the genus

Trees, deciduous. Leaves simple, purple, glandular-punctate at vein axils abaxially. Inflorescence paniculate, corymbose or racemes; terminal. Flowers bell-shaped, calyx bilabiate, or irregularly divided, globose in buds; corolla campanulate, bilabiate, upper lip bi-lobed, lower lip trilobed. Fruit capsules loculicidally dehiscent, long terete, pendent. Seeds many in several rows, rounded, thinly membranous, with hair tufts at both ends.

Worldwide: 13 species in N America and E Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
