Description of the genus

Trees. Leaves opposite or subopposite, 3-foliolate, gland-dotted; domatia present. Flowers small in many-flowered terminal panicles. Sepals and petals 4. Stamens 4. Fruit dry, leathery, indehiscent, 3-4-winged.

Derivation of name: after Professor John Hutton Balfour (1808-1884), Scottish botanist.

Worldwide: 1 species occurring in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
