Description of the genus

Epiphytes, usually without stems, offsets usually present. Leaves in dense rosettes; margins usually spiny. Inflorescence branched or not; stalk usually well developed; bracts colourful and persistent. Flowers in ranks, whorled or in random order. Fruit a fleshy coloured berry.

Worldwide: C. 170 species throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean.
