Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, palmately veined; capitula radiate; phyllaries all in 1 main row; the colour of disc flowers and ligules usually contrasting, the former darker, blue, red or pink or purple, never yellow. Fruit an achene.

Worldwide: 14 species native to the Canary Islands and Madeira.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
