Handroanthus Mattos

Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Leaves digitate with 1-7(-9) leaflets. Indumentum of simple, stellate or dendritic hairs (lepidote scales may also be present). Inflorescence dichotomously branched. Calyx campanulate to cup-shaped with 5 teeth. Corolla tubular-infundibuliform or tubular-campanulate, showy, usually yellow; magenta with a yellow throat in heptaphylla and impetiginosa. Fruit linear, often densely tomentose. Seeds winged.

Derivation of name: a combination of the name of the Brazilian botanist Oswaldo Handro (1908-1986) and the Greek word anthos meaning a flower.

Worldwide: 35 species from Mexico to tropical America.

Zimbabwe: 6 cultivated taxa.
