Description of the genus

Shrubs. Stems usually prickly. Stipules usually adnate to petiole. Leaves imparipinnate. Inflorescence terminal. Flowers (4-)5-merous, solitary or in corymbs. Hypanthium urceolate, becoming coloured and fleshy in fruit. Stamens and carpels numerous; ovules 1. Fruit composed of numerous achenes enclosed in the hypanthium.

Worldwide: 100 - 150 species, northern temperate to tropical mountains

Zimbabwe: 3 cultivated taxa.
