Description: | Perennial herb or shrub upto 2.5 m tall but usually much smaller; armed with spinescent bracteoles. Leaves subsessile,somewhat fleshy, oblong-elliptic, obovate or suborbicular, 0.7-4.5 cmlong, usually minutely spine-tipped, with coarse appressed hairs above and on the veins beneath, elsewhere with whitish spreading hairs beneath; margin rolled under, especially when young. Flowers axillary or subterminal in 1-3-flowered clusters. Bracteoles spinose, 5-18 mm long, straight or curved, often persisting as paired axillary spines. Calyx often purplish towards the apex and on the veins; outer lobes broadly ovate to elliptic; margin finely toothed or subentire, rarely spine-toothed. Corolla blue, mauve or purple, with a tube 15-24 mm long, funnel-shaped above; upper lobes 6-15 mm long; lateral lobes and lower lobe 9-18 mm long. Capsule 11.5- 17 mm long, hairless. |
