Description:	Erect herb or small subshrub to 50 cm tall. Leaves lanceolate to ovate or obovate, 1.5-5 cm long, glandular-punctate on both surfaces; margin serrate. Involucre broadly hemispheric; outer phyllaries leaf-like, curved and spreading; inner scarious in 4-6 rows, spinescent. Florets purple, 5-lobed.

Derivation of specific name:	punctatum: marked with dots or translucent glands, referring to the leaves.
