Synonyms:
Common names: Argyll apple (English) Florist’s gum (English) Silver dollar gum (English)
Description: Bark rough, strongly furrowed, persistent on trunk and larger branches, thick, fibrous. Crown of mature reproductive tree consisting of mostly juvenile leaves with some intermediate leaves. Juvenile leaves opposite, sessile, ovate and glaucous. Inflorescences axillary, simple, in clusters of 3. Fruit 5-8 × 5-9 mm, obconical sessile. Valves 3-5, slightly exserted.
Notes: A fairly common garden ornamental in Harare, generally known as “silver dollar gum” from round, silvery glaucous leaves; very popular with florists (Mullin, 1998).
Derivation of specific name: cinerea: from Latin cinus, meaning ashes, referring to the glaucous leaves
