Description of the genus

Perennial herb (in ours). Leaves mostly basal, opposite above. Inflorescence a thyrse (in ours). Bract adnate to base of pedicel. Calyx ± 2-lipped. Corolla: tube usually narrow and expanded above; lobes 2-lipped or symmetric. Stamens 4, the anticous pair either included or just visible in mouth; posticous pair always included, filaments not decurrent down corolla tube. Seeds white or (in ours) violet-blue.

Worldwide: 74 species, mainly W and SW Cape, some extending north to Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
