Leistner, O.A. (ed.) (2000) Seed plants of southern Africa: families and genera Strelitzia 10

Description of the genus

Herbs or small shrubs. Flowers borne in axillary dichasial cymes. Calyx actinomorphic, 5-lobed; tube longer than lobes. Corolla 2-lipped; upper lip 2-lobed; lower lip 3-lobed; tube longer than the lobes. Fertile stamens 2; filaments of stamens and staminodes didynamous, borne in pairs in the throat of the corolla. Fruit a capsule with inelastic placental bases. Ovary with 2 ovules in each loculus. Seeds borne on retinacula, bearing hygroscopic hairs all over the surface.

Comment: Apparently Kaj Vollesen will sink Chaetacanthus under Dyschoriste in the coming FZ volume but this is not universally accepted. Kevin Balkwill another KEW author is in favour of maintaining Chaetacanthus as a genus (pers. comm. Iain Darbyshire).
